Wine, War and more

For history buffs, wine lovers and those who just like a good old fashioned mystery, I need to share the following reads.

Wine and War by Don and Petie Kladstrup. This book was gifted to me years ago and although I initially thought it would be somewhat dry, I couldn’t have been more wrong. It actually reads like a novel, only that the people and the situations are real, making it all the more harrowing, exciting and nail biting. You will be transported in time and accompany good and evil characters through a journey of destruction and self-preservation. As a bonus, you will also learn about wine and the vintners that lovingly produced it and guarded it (the essence/spirit of France) with their lives.

Another excellent book is: The Book Thieves: The Nazi Looting of Europe’s Libraries and the Race to Return a Literary Inheritance, by Anders Rydell. Thoroughly gripping as still today, books are being reunited with their rightful owners or their descendants. If you are a bookworm or a World War II buff, you have got to read this. Sherlock Holmes, Hercule Poirot and team would have loved unearthing the traces that would step by painstaking step lead them to the families who the books originally belonged to. Very moving.

The third suggested read on this list is: Nazi Gold:The Sensational Story of the World’s Greatest Robbery – and the Greatest Criminal Cover-Up by Ian Sayer and Douglas Bottingazi . This is the true story of the theft of the German national gold and foreign currency reserves, which disappeared after the fall of the Nazi regime. It is all here: racketeering, seedy underworld locations, banks, politicians, gangsters, secrets, cover-ups and more. Conspiracy theorists and non will adore this story.

AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST…

For those of you that want to sink your teeth into still more War History, I suggest you check out retired Lieutenant Colonel and author, Ken Nesbitt’s site: historyperspectives.com where you will find interesting and eye-opening presentations on military conflict that span from William the Conquerer to WWII. Presentations can also be requested in person or via social media.
